December 5, 2025 – The European Association of Flexible Polyurethane Foam Blocks Manufacturers (EUROPUR) announced the launch of the CertiPUR™ re-bonded foam certification module, extending the existing CertiPUR™ certification system to mechanically recycled flexible polyurethane foam. This marks the world's first certification system specifically dedicated to the health and safety performance of re-bonded foam used in mattresses, upholstered furniture, and other comfort applications.

As the industry moves towards greater circularity, re-bonded foam made from industrial offcuts or post-consumer waste polyurethane foam is gaining increased attention. Previously, there was a lack of unified standards to ensure such materials consistently meet strict chemical content and emission requirements. The newly launched CertiPUR™ re-bonded foam certification module was created to address this need, providing a third-party-verified scientific framework to ensure the safety of re-bonded polyurethane foam products for consumers.
Identical to the main CertiPUR™ certification system, the re-bonded foam module clearly defines substances prohibited in polyurethane foam production and sets strict limits for specific components. Certification requires testing by an independent third-party laboratory: re-bonded foam from industrial sources must be tested annually, while post-consumer re-bonded foam requires semi-annual testing to ensure ongoing compliance.
With the introduction of the CertiPUR™ re-bonded foam certification module, EUROPUR has taken a significant step in supporting the responsible use of recycled polyurethane foam materials. This new module gives manufacturers and their customers confidence that the circular economy can go hand-in-hand with high standards of health and safety.
This new certification module is open to re-bonded polyurethane foam producers worldwide. With this addition, the CertiPUR™ certification system now covers three types of flexible polyurethane foam: slabstock foam for furniture and bedding, molded foam, and re-bonded foam.
Founded in 2005, the CertiPUR™ program currently encompasses 81 foam production sites globally, including 71 slabstock producers and 10 molded foam manufacturers. It is recognized as a leading voluntary health and safety standard for flexible polyurethane foam. The addition of the re-bonded foam module strengthens the program's role in supporting safe materials, transparency, and the industry's long-term sustainable development goals.
