Ecogenesis Biopolymers recently unveiled its new genTPU filament, a plant-based thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) specifically designed for Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printing. The TPU filament is available in two hardness grades, 95A and 60D, with a diameter of 1.75 mm. It utilizes Soleic TPU from Algenesis Labs and is manufactured in the United States.

The company states that genTPU significantly reduces the environmental footprint while maintaining the mechanical strength and flexibility of traditional polyurethanes. The base polymer, Soleic TPU, is derived from renewable plant resources and is certified by the USDA BioPreferred Program.

genTPU is the first fully biodegradable flexible TPU filament for 3D printing. The company reports a reduced carbon footprint of 77.8% to 83.8% compared to petroleum-based alternatives. Laboratory tests conducted according to a modified ASTM D5338 composting standard indicate a biodegradation rate of 27% within 180 days at 45°C, as measured by carbon dioxide respirometry, marking a significant improvement in the degradation performance of flexible polymers.

Ecogenesis Biopolymers states that this TPU filament is specially designed to fully degrade in natural environments, including marine settings, without leaving microplastic residues. The material maintains its mechanical integrity during use and degrades only at the end of its service life.

Currently, the TPU filament is available in four colors: Clear, Black, Grey, and White. The product is now available in the United States and is expected to go on sale in Europe in the summer of 2026. The company plans to announce distribution partnerships in the first quarter of 2026.
