It is noteworthy that Kumho Mitsui Chemical's 200,000 tons/year of new MDI capacity just commenced operation last year, raising its total MDI capacity to 610,000 tons/year. This move will add another 100,000 tons/year of MDI capacity.
Details of the Capacity Increase

Reasons for the Capacity Increase
Reportedly, MDI is a key raw material for polyurethane, widely used in automotive parts, furniture and bedding, housing and refrigerator insulation, elastic fibers, and various adhesives. Due to global policy measures promoting improved residential insulation to curb global warming, coupled with demand growth from economic expansion, MDI demand is projected to grow at an annual rate of approximately 5% in the future.
Kumho Mitsui Chemical produces and sells high-performance MDI monomer, modified MDI, and high-viscosity polymeric MDI for manufacturing automotive parts, elastic fibers, and high flame-retardant insulation materials. It also produces general-purpose polymeric MDI for insulation in housing and home appliances. The plant has been operating at full capacity since completing the 200,000-ton expansion in 2024. This new capacity addition will enable Kumho Mitsui Chemical to meet growing demand in the automotive materials sector, as well as market demand for high-performance MDI in flame-retardant insulation materials.
Furthermore, this capacity increase will allow for the full utilization of the recycling facility introduced during the previous 200,000-ton expansion, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions per unit of MDI produced. Through these measures, Kumho Mitsui Chemical is committed to lowering the plant's carbon footprint while improving energy efficiency, aiming for cost rationalization and the establishment of a sustainable production system.
