·A biomass balance (BMB) product offering direct substitution without reformulation or process changes

·Expected to reduce carbon footprint by 21% to 29% compared to BASF's conventional spray polyurethane foam systems

April 24, 2026 – BASF has launched ELASTOSPRAY® BMB, a biomass balance isocyanate developed specifically for BASF's spray polyurethane foam (SPF) systems. This product significantly reduces embodied carbon while maintaining the same reliable performance, processability, and compliance as conventional BASF isocyanates.

ELASTOSPRAY® BMB isocyanate further expands BASF's portfolio of low-carbon building materials and addresses the growing demand from builders, contractors, architects, and specifiers for sustainable solutions with high performance and third-party certification.

"ELASTOSPRAY® BMB enables our customers to reduce the product carbon footprint of their spray polyurethane foam insulation systems without changing formulations, processing conditions, or application methods," said Nancy Houle, Business Director for Spray Polyurethane at BASF North America. "This drop-in solution helps advance the building industry's sustainability goals while maintaining the reliability and performance the industry has come to expect from BASF."

ELASTOSPRAY® BMB isocyanate uses a certified biomass balance approach: renewable raw materials (such as renewable natural gas from landfills) are incorporated at the beginning of the production process and allocated to specific products via a certified mass balance method.

The product has been independently verified by the REDcert² certification system, ensuring transparency and credibility for the use of renewable raw materials. BASF's biomass balance method has also passed independent certification, supporting product carbon footprint calculations in accordance with internationally recognized life cycle assessment standards.

Designed for More Sustainable Construction

When used with BASF's spray foam systems (including the WALLTITE® RSB and ENERTITE® series formulations), ELASTOSPRAY® BMB isocyanate provides system-specific Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), offering transparent, third-party verified environmental data for building life cycle assessments and green building projects.

Produced using renewable energy and designed for the North American market, ELASTOSPRAY® BMB isocyanate not only reflects BASF's commitment to local supply reliability but also helps customers meet the evolving sustainability demands of the residential and commercial building sectors.
