The national standard GB/T 2943—2025 “Adhesives Terminology” was officially released on October 31, 2025. This standard will replace GB/T 2943—2008 and is scheduled to come into effect on May 1, 2026. As a foundational standard in the adhesives field, the new version is under the purview of TC185 (National Technical Committee 185 on Adhesives) and administered by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation. Its purpose is to unify industry terminology definitions, providing an authoritative basis for production, trade, scientific research, and quality management.
The new standard features systematic structural optimization and significant content updates. Specifically, it adds 237 terms, including “pressure-sensitive adhesive products,” covering emerging materials and technologies; revises 67 existing terms such as “sealant,” ensuring definitions align with current technological developments; and removes 14 obsolete or redundant terms to enhance the standard's conciseness. These adjustments not only reflect technological progress within the adhesives industry but also strengthen the applicability and international compatibility of the terminology.
The implementation of this standard will have far-reaching impacts. Firstly, by unifying terminology definitions, it will effectively reduce communication barriers within the industry and foster technical exchange and collaboration. Secondly, it provides a standardized tool for quality supervision, product certification, and market regulation, promoting more refined industry management. Furthermore, the new standard will assist enterprises in improving R&D efficiency, optimizing production processes, and enhancing international competitiveness, thereby supporting the transition of the adhesives industry towards high-quality, innovation-driven development.
As a fundamental technical specification, the release of the national standard GB/T 2943—2025 “Adhesives Terminology” marks a new stage in China’s standardization work for adhesives, injecting fresh momentum into the sustainable development of the industry.
