Digital ToolPolyurethane FoamSustainable Design

January 28, 2026 – Covestro has launched a groundbreaking digital tool, the CQ-Configurator, to help polyurethane value chain partners design more sustainable foam solutions based on Covestro's environmental data. This application-oriented tool supports both flexible and rigid polyurethane foam applications ranging from mattresses to insulation panels. It seamlessly translates information at the raw material level into actionable product impact assessments, thereby enabling easy sustainability evaluations across all functions within an organization.

Businesses across industries face increasing pressure to demonstrate their progress in sustainability to meet market demands, Scope 3 emission reporting, and increasingly stringent regulatory requirements. Patrizia Wegner, Vice President of Flexible Foam Sales for the EMLA region (Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America except Mexico) at Covestro, stated: "The CQ-Configurator addresses these needs by supporting fast, data-based environmental performance assessments and increasing transparency along the polyurethane value chain."

Dennis Wagner, Market Manager for Upholstery at Covestro, added: "Now, businesses can compare various material options and achieve desired product sustainability targets with just a few clicks — eliminating time-consuming calculations and lengthy coordination processes."

From Data to Decision: Making Sustainability Accessible
The CQ-Configurator is intuitive to use. Users can select a flexible or rigid foam application (e.g., mattress, insulation panel, or even a special formulation), define technical characteristics, and specify the proportion of mass-balanced isocyanates and polyols. The tool then calculates the CO₂ emissions and the share of sustainable materials for each formulation option.

By translating formulation choices into clear, application-specific sustainability outcomes, the CQ-Configurator provides companies with a transparent, factual basis to support internal decision-making. It enables quick comparison of different material options, with results that can be exported for easy cross-departmental coordination and communication with customers. Simultaneously, the tool links material selection to market-relevant sustainability benefits, supporting product development and marketing strategies.

Designed for Broad Industry Applications
This digital tool supports various specialized roles involved in product development, including R&D specialists, procurement teams, sales managers, marketing personnel, and sustainability experts. Its intuitive interface ensures that both technical and non-technical users can effectively utilize these insights.

Dennis Wagner further commented: "As sustainability becomes a key differentiator in markets like bedding, furniture, construction, and appliances, the CQ-Configurator empowers companies to make informed choices that combine product performance with economic benefits."

With the launch of the CQ-Configurator, Covestro becomes the first European polyurethane material supplier to offer a comprehensive digital sustainability assessment tool focused on a variety of polyurethane foam applications. The tool provides transparent and reliable sustainability metrics based on third-party-verified raw material Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data and Covestro's longstanding expertise in polyurethanes, supporting informed decision-making across the value chain. Covestro will continue to expand its digital portfolio to support customers in achieving their sustainability goals.
